Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has used his first public message to call for national unity and declare that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed as a means of exerting pressure.

The statement, delivered on Iranian state television by a newsreader, also included a warning over the US military presence in the region.

According to the message, American bases across the Middle East must be closed, otherwise they would face attack.
