In his first statement since taking office, Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said Tehran remained committed to friendly relations with neighbouring countries but would continue targeting American bases in the region.

He said Iran’s actions were directed at the US military presence rather than neighbouring states, while also warning that all American bases across the Middle East should be shut down at once.

Khamenei added that any bases left in operation would face attack.
