An Iranian security official has suggested the continuing US strikes could soon open up a new front in the wider regional conflict.
Speaking to Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity, the source said the war was likely to move into a new stage in the near future.
The official warned that, from Tehran’s perspective, direct US involvement would inevitably make the situation far more complicated. He added that another strategically important maritime route could soon come under pressure in much the same way as the Strait of Hormuz.
No further detail was given on which waterway might be affected.
The source also said Iran’s defence strategy was being implemented in stages and claimed the country still had significant options available.
