Eilat blast emerges despite censorship as Israel comes under fresh missile fire

Rory Challands, reporting from Amman, says some earlier reports of missile damage in Lod, Bnei Brak and Ramla now appear to have been scaled back.

According to the latest information he cites, fires reported in those areas do not now appear to have been caused by missile impacts.

Damage is, however, confirmed in Holon, Challands reports. He says a fire breaks out there and two people in their 80s are taken to hospital — one with injuries from flying glass, the other suffering smoke inhalation.

Challands says missile attacks have continued across Israel for more than 12 hours. He reports strikes affecting the south, centre and north, while Hezbollah rocket fire from across the Lebanese border also continues.

He describes one of the most serious recent incidents as taking place in Eilat, in Israel’s far south. According to his reporting, a cluster munition hits the city and spreads across several sites.

At least 10 locations in Eilat report missile damage, Challands says. He adds that a number of people are injured, including a 12-year-old boy.

Challands also reports that censors initially try to prevent details of the Eilat strike from emerging. But he says the information becomes public after people in Aqaba, the Jordanian city directly across the water, film the impact and post the footage online.
