Donald Trump has said US forces struck and destroyed 10 Iranian boats or ships that he claimed were being used to lay naval mines.

In a post on social media, the US president said the vessels had been “completely destroyed” in strikes carried out over the past few hours, adding that further action could follow.

Trump also updated an earlier post about alleged Iranian efforts to mine the Strait of Hormuz, using stronger language to warn of additional attacks.

He said the US was deploying the same missile technology and capabilities used against drug traffickers to target any vessel attempting to place mines in the vital shipping lane.

Trump added that any such boats or ships would be dealt with rapidly and, in his words, “violently”.
