Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, says Tehran is prepared to speak to countries seeking assurances over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
In an interview with CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, Araghchi says Iran is “open” to talks with states that want vessels to pass safely through the waterway.
He says several countries have already approached Iran on the issue, although he does not name them.
The comments come as traffic through the Strait drops sharply, following multiple reports of Iranian attacks on ships in the area.
Araghchi also says Iran’s nuclear facilities are now “under rubble” and claims there is, for now, no programme or plan to rebuild them.
Looking back at earlier nuclear negotiations with Washington, he says Iran had offered to reduce the concentration of its enriched material during those talks.
He describes that proposal as a significant concession by Tehran.
But Araghchi says the conflict has altered the situation, adding that nothing is currently being discussed and that any future move depends on what happens next.
