Iran has told member states of the International Maritime Organization that vessels it considers “non-hostile” may pass through the Strait of Hormuz, as long as they coordinate with Iranian authorities, according to the Financial Times.
The newspaper says the message is contained in a letter circulated to IMO members. Al Jazeera says it has not been able to independently verify the report.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route. In peacetime, about 20% of the world’s oil passes through the narrow waterway connecting the Gulf to the Indian Ocean.
