Iran’s foreign minister says Sir Keir Starmer is endangering British citizens after ministers agree that the US can use UK military bases in the Middle East.

Downing Street says those bases may be used for what it describes as “defensive operations”. It says that could include action to weaken missile sites linked to attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, Seyed Abbas Araghchi says the “vast majority” of people in Britain do not want the UK involved in what he calls the “Israel-US war of choice on Iran”.

Araghchi says Mr Starmer is “putting British lives in danger” by allowing British bases to be used for what he describes as aggression against Iran.

He adds that Iran “will exercise its right to self-defence”.
