Kurdish opposition figure says Iran’s leadership ‘won’t last much longer’

A senior figure in the Komala Party of Kurdistan has said he believes Iran’s current political system is nearing collapse, as pressure mounts from war and internal dissent.

Amjad Hussein Panahi, head of the party’s political bureau, told Al Jazeera he thinks “the Iranian regime will not last much longer”, describing it as “crumbling” and “breathing its last” in the eyes of the international community.

He said Komala is working with others as part of what he called the “Women’s Revolution for a Free Life”, arguing that the authorities “need time to collapse” but that opposition groups are pushing towards that outcome.

Panahi also sought to distance the Kurdish coalition from separatism, saying their political programme does not include breaking Iran apart. Instead, he outlined a goal of a decentralised Iran that guarantees equal rights for Kurds, Baloch, Arabs, Persians and other communities, including an end to executions and the right to education in minority languages.

He added that Komala has not received US backing, but suggested US support would make the results “greater and more welcome” if Washington were to join what he described as an uprising against Iran’s rulers.
