Iran launches further retaliatory strikes as conflict spreads across the region

Iran has continued firing on targets across the Middle East as the conflict widens following the US–Israeli strikes that began over the weekend.

At a Pentagon briefing, US Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen Dan Caine claimed Iran’s launch rate has fallen sharply since the first day of fighting. He said Iran’s “theatre ballistic missile shots fired are down 86%”, including a further 23% decrease in the past 24 hours. He also claimed Iran’s “one-way attack drone” launches are down 73% compared with the opening days.

Despite that, several countries reported being targeted today:

  • Turkey: Turkey’s Presidency Communications Director said NATO air-defence systems intercepted an Iranian missile that was travelling towards Turkish airspace.

  • Qatar: Qatar’s Defence Ministry said it faced 10 drones and two cruise missiles at dawn, and claimed all were intercepted by a combination of Qatari air and naval forces.

  • UAE: The United Arab Emirates said it intercepted three missiles and 121 drones, and that eight drones also fell on its territory. In an earlier statement, the UAE foreign ministry claimed the country has been subjected to more than 1,000 attacks since the conflict began.

  • Israel: The Israel Defense Forces said it identified missiles launched from Iran towards Israeli territory. An IDF official also told CNN that “two barrages” from Iran and Hezbollah were launched simultaneously towards Israel.

UK Fact Check note: the Pentagon and regional government figures above are official claims made in a fast-moving conflict and are difficult to independently verify in real time.
