Cross-border rocket fire prompts Iraqi sweep near Mosul

At least seven rockets are fired from the Iraqi town of Rabi’a towards a US military base in north-east Syria, two Iraqi security sources tell Reuters.

The sources say the rockets are aimed at the Rmeilan base. Reuters reports that this is the first such attack since the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran began.

According to the same sources, Iraqi forces seize a launcher mounted on top of a burnt-out lorry in the Rabi’a district, west of Mosul. They believe it is the platform used to fire the seven rockets.

The Syrian army says one of its military bases in Hasaka, in north-east Syria, comes under rocket attack. In its statement, it does not describe the site as American or say it houses US troops.

The same statement says contact and co-ordination have taken place with the Iraqi side following the incident. It adds that the Iraqi army has launched sweep and search operations to track down those responsible.
