IRGC now says three tankers ablaze in Strait of Hormuz as UKMTO reports fire off Khasab

The IRGC Navy now says three tankers exploded and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday 8 November, up from the two it reported on Saturday.

In a statement reported by Al Jazeera and Middle East Eye, it says "three rogue oil tankers traveling an unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz have been hit by explosions and severe fires". It says their navigation and identification systems were switched off. It named no vessels and gave no nationalities.

Middle East Eye reports that the IRGC blames the fires on the tankers' conduct and on "the aggression of the American invading military".

Separately, Gulf News says UKMTO reported a tanker on fire off Khasab, Oman, and the crew was evacuated. ABC News says UKMTO reported an unnamed tanker "struck by an unknown projectile while transiting outbound".

The IRGC's account of the cause has not been independently confirmed. It is also not confirmed that the tanker in UKMTO's report is one of the three the IRGC describes. Tehran Times carried a near-identical IRGC claim about three tankers on 3 November.
