A US official tells Al Jazeera that roughly 3,000 American troops from the 82nd Airborne Division are expected to head to the Middle East.

According to the official, the force would come from three battalions of the division.

The same official says no formal deployment order has been issued so far.

The 82nd Airborne can be ready to move within 18 hours of receiving instructions, the official adds.
