Sky’s US correspondent Mark Stone says a US fighter aircraft has gone down inside Iran at some point in the last 12 hours.
Tehran claims it shot down an F-35. But Stone says the aircraft now appears to have been an F-15, with two people believed to have been on board.
He says the immediate issue is the fate of those crew members. In his assessment, there is real uncertainty over whether they are alive, dead or in Iranian hands.
Stone says a rescue or recovery operation is now likely to be needed. He warns that any such mission would carry significant risk.
He also says Washington faces what he describes as two deeply serious possible outcomes: either the pilots have been killed, or they are captured and could be used for propaganda.
According to Stone, the US military is likely to provide a fuller account over the next few hours.
