Macron says “when Cyprus is attacked, Europe is attacked”

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that “when Cyprus is attacked, Europe is attacked”, using a visit to the island to frame the recent escalation as a broader European security issue. He made the remarks during talks in Cyprus after the drone strike on a British base on the island sharpened concerns about spillover from the Iran war.

Macron also said France would deploy two frigates as part of efforts to protect shipping, describing the planned mission as “purely defensive” and focused on escort duties in coordination with European and non-European partners. Reporting from the visit says France has already moved naval and air-defence assets towards the eastern Mediterranean and around Cyprus as part of that wider posture.

The comments come as Cyprus has become a focal point for European military signalling, with several countries reinforcing the island after the attack on RAF Akrotiri. Macron’s language is likely to be read as an attempt to cast any threat to Cyprus not as a local incident, but as a challenge to the wider European bloc.
