The Saudi-led coalition says its air defences intercepted two ballistic missiles fired by the Iran-aligned Houthis towards Riyadh on Sunday 8 November. It says it intercepted a separate ballistic missile aimed at the Eastern Province earlier the same morning.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said on social media, as quoted by Gulf News:
"Air defences intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi terrorist militia towards Riyadh"
A Reuters witness said Saudi Civil Defense issued an alert in the Riyadh region shortly before loud booms were heard in the capital. Authorities later said the danger had passed.
Arab News says the coalition has reported at least 15 missiles and drones intercepted across Saudi Arabia so far in November.
On Saturday, the Houthi-run health ministry said Saudi airstrikes killed at least 33 people near Sanaa, Reuters reports. Saudi authorities said they were investigating. The Houthi figure has not been independently verified.
Reuters describes the fighting as a front in the wider Middle East war triggered by the US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February. It says the 2022 UN-brokered truce has been shattered and that Houthi attacks on Saudi targets have continued since hostilities resumed in July.
