Gambling firms join banks and online platforms as reported Budget tax targets

Gambling firms are expected to face new taxes in today's Budget, according to a Reuters preview carried by Global Banking & Finance. Gambling had not previously featured among the reported tax-raisers.

The preview says the Chancellor, John Healey, is set to announce a cautious Budget aimed at avoiding more bond-market pressure on the Burnham government. It reports that new taxes on banks, gambling firms and online platforms such as Amazon and Temu would fund help for poorer households and a fuel duty freeze.

The preview gives no rate for the gambling measure and no estimate of how much it would raise. None of the measures has been confirmed by the Treasury.

The same report repeats two measures reported earlier. One is paperwork cuts for business estimated to save £800m a year. The other is more than £20bn of extra support for state finance institutions.

Healey delivers the Budget to the Commons later today.
