The CBI is urging the Chancellor, John Healey, to raise the threshold at which employers start paying National Insurance by £1,000, from £5,000 to £6,000. The business group says the change would encourage firms to hire young workers.
The proposal is in the CBI's Budget submission, published on Thursday 15 October and reported by City AM. The submission also calls for cuts to employment taxes and energy bills, and asks the Chancellor to give firms "breathing space".
The CBI warns that further tax rises risk choking off investment and jobs.
City AM also reports that Healey and the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, told business chiefs on Tuesday 13 October that they would preside over the "most pro-business country" in the world. City AM has reported only part of the wording.
Healey delivers the Budget to the Commons on Wednesday 28 October.
