Budget adds £1.5bn for around 10,000 social and affordable homes in England

The Budget gives an extra £1.5bn to the Social and Affordable Homes Programme for around 10,000 homes in England, with priority for social rent and council housing, according to the Budget document.

Construction News reports that the money is spread between 2027-28 and 2030-31. It says total investment in the programme now stands at more than £40bn over 10 years.

Land sold to registered social housing providers will be zero-rated for VAT from 1 April 2027, subject to legislation, Construction News reports.

The Chancellor, John Healey, also confirmed £432m to tackle rough sleeping and a £1.5bn bespoke borrowing facility for mayors to fund what are described as "good growth funds", according to Building. Building says the rough sleeping money had been trailed before the Budget, so it is not a new announcement today.
