This is a page published by the anonymous editors of hormuz.data-tracking.net, which tracks ship positions (AIS) in the Strait of Hormuz. It covers 8 March to 26 October 2026, during the 2026 Iran war. The background is well supported: a crisis in the strait that began on 28 February 2026, about 20 M bbl/day of oil passing through before the war, widespread GPS/AIS jamming, and a sharp rise in attacks in October. Almost every UKMTO attack entry I checked matched UKMTO's own PDFs or dated news reports. The page is also unusually open about its methods and their limits. However, its core reading of the numbers is contradicted by commercial ship-tracking data. The page says October oil flow is about 1.1 M bbl/day, a fall of 93–94% from before the war, and that 'the rough magnitude of the collapse' is backed up by other evidence. Kpler data reported by CNBC on 6 and 9 October, and by Wikipedia and The National around 21 October, put crude flows through Hormuz at roughly 8.5–14 M bbl/day in late September and October. Windward estimated 9–10 M bpd. The page also shows flows falling in September, while Kpler shows a September rebound to around pre-war levels for Middle East exports. Its July peak sits uneasily with Lloyd's List figures and USNI reporting that traffic collapsed after 13 July. The page's own data (monthly counts, oil estimates, the 12 July data outage, the 194 recovered crossings) cannot be independently checked. Its figures have also been revised without notice: an archived copy from 18 October and the September statistics page give different numbers.

What checked out (18)

  • Context: a war and shipping crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has been under way since 28 February 2026, and traffic in March–May was far below pre-war levels. Wikipedia's '2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis' page gives 28 Feb 2026 to present. Al Jazeera (27 Aug 2026) reports about 5 vessels a day after the IRGC closure on 2 March, rising to about 20 a day after the 17 June interim agreement, and falling back after the US blockade resumed on 14 July.
  • Pre-war baseline of about 20 M bbl/day: the IEA gives an average of 20 mb/d of crude and products in 2025, and the EIA (via Vortexa) gives about 20 M bbl/day in 2024.
  • Widespread GPS/AIS jamming linked to the conflict is distorting vessel positions in the strait: Windward (August 2026 analysis), Safety4Sea (11 March 2026) and Bloomberg all report it. Caveat: the page dates the problem to mid-July, but outside sources show jamming from early March. Mid-July is accurate only as the point when the page's own data source degraded.
  • October 2026 has seen the most ship attacks of the war: Al Jazeera (17 Oct 2026), Seatrade Maritime (13 Oct 2026: at least 18 attacks in the strait since the start of October), and CNBC (9 Oct 2026: 11 tankers attacked in the week to 4 October).
  • UKMTO 181-26: tanker hit 7NM north-east of Limah, Oman, 22 Oct 2026 at 1715 UTC, reported late. Confirmed by the UKMTO warning PDF and Anadolu Agency.
  • UKMTO 179-26: tanker hit 11NM west of Bukha, Oman, 21 Oct 2026 at 0145 UTC. Confirmed by gCaptain (21 Oct) and Iran International.
  • UKMTO 180-26: tanker hit 30NM south-east of Al Faw, Iraq, 20 Oct 2026 at 1830 UTC, reported late. Confirmed by gCaptain and Devdiscourse.
  • UKMTO 177-26: tug hit north-east of Khor Fakkan, UAE, 18 Oct 2026. Confirmed by Arab News PK and ANI.
  • UKMTO 176-26: skiff fired two shots at a tanker in the Gulf of Aden on 17 Oct 2026 at 10:30 UTC, and the security team fired warning shots back. Confirmed by the UKMTO/JMIC advisory note of 18 Oct, which places it about 140NM south-east of Al Mukalla.
  • UKMTO 175-26: tanker hit by an RPG from a small boat, damage to the aft port quarter, 16 Oct 2026 at 1922 UTC. Confirmed by the UKMTO warning PDF (78NM north-east of Al Jubayl).
  • UKMTO 174-26: tanker hit by an unknown projectile 68NM north-east of Al Jubayl. Confirmed by Arab News and Newsmobile.
  • UKMTO 158-26: tanker attacked 51NM north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, 7 Oct 2026 at 1900 UTC. Confirmed by the UKMTO warning PDF and Anadolu Agency.
  • UKMTO 165: incident in the Gulf of Oman (near Sohar anchorage) reclassified as an attack after a drone (UAV) strike was confirmed. Confirmed by Arab News and the Jerusalem Post.
  • UKMTO 153-26 and 154-26 (4 Oct, at 1716 and 1907 UTC), 155-26 (3 Oct, time to be confirmed) and the 5 Oct engine-room fire: confirmed by Seatrade Maritime (5 Oct 2026).
  • Four late-reported attacks on 11 October (three tankers and one container ship), listed by the page as UKMTO 166–169 with 12 Oct timestamps: confirmed by Seatrade Maritime (13 Oct 2026).
  • UKMTO 144-26, 145-26 and 146-26 (three tankers hit, from verified sources): confirmed by bne IntelliNews (30 Sep 2026).
  • UKMTO does not name the vessels in its warnings: bne IntelliNews says UKMTO gave no vessel names.
  • The monthly table's arithmetic is internally consistent. Each per-day rate (for example 151.3/31 = 4.88; 29.8/26 = 1.15) matches, the July figure of about 24% of 20 M bbl/day checks out, and the October fall of about 94% is arithmetically right.
✕ Disputed claims 3 claims ⌄
  • DISPUTED, misleading as a description of actual flows: 'Against the ~20 M bbl/day pre-war baseline that is a decline of –93% to –94%… the direction and rough magnitude of the collapse are corroborated.' Kpler data contradicts this: 10.3 M bpd through Hormuz in the week to about 3 Oct (CNBC, 6 Oct 2026), 8.5 M bpd in the week to about 7 Oct (CNBC, 9 Oct 2026), about 14 M bpd including offshore transfers (Wikipedia citing Kpler, as of 21 Oct 2026), and at least 10.1 M bpd of crude after a 27% weekly fall (OilPrice, about 25–26 Oct 2026). Windward estimates 9–10 M bpd. These figures imply falls of roughly 30–60%, not 93–94%. The arithmetic is right for AIS-detected volume; the reading of what it means is not.
  • DISPUTED: the claim that the data shows a meaningful 'trend, not census', with flows 'settling lower' from August into September and October. Kpler-based reports say Middle East crude exports rebounded in September to around pre-war levels, with daily figures above pre-war levels on 24 and 27–29 September (The Arab Weekly, about 5 Oct 2026; CNBC, 9 Oct 2026). The page instead shows September falling to 1.4 M bbl/day from 2.9 M in August. That casts doubt on the claim that its bias is 'roughly stable' over short periods.
  • MINOR INACCURACY: the page says jamming has degraded reporting 'since mid-July'. Safety4Sea (11 Mar 2026), Windward and Bloomberg document widespread GPS/AIS interference from early March 2026.
? Unverified claims 6 claims ⌄
  • The page's own operations: polling every 30 minutes since 8 March 2026, the 'fleet-data enrichment' completed in late May, its upstream AIS source largely failing in the western strait from 12 July, compensating rules added on 27 July, and 194 crossings recovered. No outside source confirms any of these.
  • All monthly crossing counts and detected oil volumes (for example 793 crossings and 151.3 M bbl in July; 590 crossings and 29.8 M bbl to 26 October). These cannot be checked, and they have been revised retroactively without a published change log. The 18 October version of the page said June 713, July 790 and July oil 149.2 M bbl. The page's own September statistics page says 575 crossings and 32.6 M bbl, against 639 and 41.2 M bbl here.
  • Outbound LNG carrier counts (9, 5, 2, 12 and 5 for June to October). No independent source found.
  • June–July as the year's peak. This is plausible for June and early July given the 17 June interim agreement. But Lloyd's List Intelligence (21 Jul 2026: non-Iranian transits fell from 108 to 25 week on week, total traffic down about 90% year on year) and USNI (31 Jul 2026: single-digit daily transits from 19 July) suggest the July record total partly reflects the page's own backfilling, which it admits is a reconstruction. Not marked false, because the page also counts small craft and the first half of July was busier.
  • That the page's method of inferring crossings from movements between zones and anchorages correctly corrects for jamming. Windward (August 2026) found that 61.2% of the 642 logged Hormuz transits in August were false, created by jamming. That is close to the page's August count of 648, so the risk of false positives is real, but this tracker's own data cannot be checked.
  • That every figure can be recalculated from the free JSON API on the page's live dashboard. Not tested.

Confidence

Medium (0.70) — Confidence is high for the attack log and background facts, which are backed by several primary UKMTO documents and dated reports from reputable outlets. Confidence is moderate for the disputed reading of the numbers: several independent Kpler and Windward figures consistently contradict the size of the fall the page claims, but those trackers use different scopes and methods. The figures are directionally the same and differ by an order of magnitude, so the dispute is robust. Confidence is low for the page's own data (counts, outage dates, the backfill), which cannot be independently checked and has been revised without notice. The score of 56 balances real openness about methods and an accurate incident log against a headline conclusion that the best available independent data contradicts.

1. [Home]( 2. [Guides]( 3. Shipping timeline By the hormuz.data-tracking.net editors · Last updated 26 October 2026 · Data through 26 October 2026 This tracker has been polling AIS positions across the Strait of Hormuz every 30 minutes since **8 March 2026**, detecting each vessel that completes a crossing between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. That gives us an unusual dataset: a continuous, independently measured record of how shipping through the world's most important oil chokepoint behaved through a war. This page walks through it month by month — including the honest caveats about what changed in our own measurement along the way. **Read this first:** every number below is an AIS-derived lower bound. Ships that transit with transponders off, or whose signals are lost to [GPS/AIS jamming]( are not counted. Month-to-month changes mix three things: real traffic shifts, reporting quality, and two marked upgrades to our own detection rules. We flag the methodology changes explicitly below. ## The monthly record | Month | Completed crossings | Detected outbound oil | ≈ per day | | | | | | | March 2026 (from Mar 8) | 158 | 23.7 M bbl | 1.0 M | | April 2026 | 406 | 37.9 M bbl | 1.3 M | | May 2026 | 409 | 41.6 M bbl | 1.3 M | | June 2026 | 714 | 101.1 M bbl | 3.4 M | | July 2026 | 793 | 151.3 M bbl | 4.9 M | | August 2026 | 648 | 90.6 M bbl | 2.9 M | | September 2026 | 639 | 41.2 M bbl | 1.4 M | | October 2026 (to Oct 26) | 590 | 29.8 M bbl | 1.1 M | This table, every figure quoted in the commentary below and the attack list further down are generated from the live database each time the page is served, exactly as the [monthly statistics]( are. The wording of the commentary is editorial. Oil volume is estimated per outbound crude/product/chemical tanker crossing as deadweight × 95% load factor × 7.33 barrels per tonne — the method is described on the [methodology page]( Full breakdowns by vessel type, flag and tanker are in the [monthly statistics archive]( ## March–May: baseline building The first three months establish the floor. Detection rules were young (March is also a partial month), and coverage of smaller traffic — dhows, tugs, service vessels — improved steadily. Detected oil flow settled around 1.3 M bbl/day over April and May: already a fraction of the ~20 M bbl/day that transited before the war, consistent with a strait operating far below its pre-war norm, with much of the remaining trade carried by vessels that do not advertise themselves on AIS. ## June–July: the detected peak June and July show the highest measured activity of the year: 714 and 793 completed crossings, with detected outbound oil peaking at 151.3 M bbl in July — about 4.9 M bbl/day, still only 24% of pre-war seaborne flow. Two caveats belong to this period. First, our fleet-data enrichment matured in late May, so more tankers carried the deadweight figures needed to count toward volume. Second, from **12 July** our upstream AIS source largely stopped serving positions in the western strait (the traffic lanes and Bandar Abbas anchorages) — raw crossing detections collapsed for two weeks until we shipped compensating detection rules on **27 July** and backfilled 194 crossings that the gap had hidden. July's total is honest, but it is a reconstruction of a badly jammed month, not clean data. ## Mid-July onward: jamming becomes the story Widespread GPS/AIS interference linked to the conflict has degraded position reporting across the strait since mid-July: vessels appear misplaced, delayed, or vanish mid-transit. Our detection compensates by inferring transits from zone transitions and anchorage behaviour rather than requiring a clean track, and the drop in _detected_ traffic from July to August partly reflects reporting quality, not only real flows. The [jamming guide]( explains the mechanics and what spoofed tracks look like. ## August onward: settling lower August recorded 648 crossings and 90.6 M bbl detected outbound (~2.9 M bbl/day), and October to date runs at 1.1 M bbl/day. Against the ~20 M bbl/day pre-war baseline that is a decline of **–93% to –94%** (the dashboard's headline comparison uses a rolling seven-day average, so it moves around the same range). Whether the true figure is quite that stark is unknowable from AIS alone — dark tankers move unknown volumes — but the direction and rough magnitude of the collapse are corroborated by the pattern across every vessel class we track. For scale, outbound LNG carriers numbered 9 in June, 5 in July, 2 in August, 12 in September and 5 in October to date. ## Latest reported attacks Attack reports from UKMTO over the last 30 days, newest first. Each is marked where it was reported on the [live map]( and the [24-hour replay]( UKMTO names no vessel, so none of these can be tied to a ship in our records. * **22 Oct 2026, 17:15 UTC** · Strait of Hormuz · Tanker — UKMTO WARNING 181-26 ATTACK Incident Date: 22 OCT 2026 Incident Time: 1715UTC UKMTO has received a time-late report of an incident 7NM northeast of Limah, Oman.
