The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has dismantled what it describes as the first illegal weight-loss jab production facility discovered in the UK. The operation took place in October 2025 at a warehouse on an industrial estate in Northampton.
The facility was producing unlicensed pens labelled as retatrutide and tirzepatide, weight-loss drugs developed by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. Retatrutide is currently in clinical trials and is not licensed for medical use in any country, while tirzepatide is licensed in the UK as Mounjaro.
The MHRA stated the raid was the largest single seizure of trafficked weight-loss medicines ever recorded by a law enforcement agency worldwide. Officers seized more than £250,000 worth of unlicensed products and £20,000 in cash.
The agency described the operation as the first illicit production facility for weight-loss medicine discovered within the UK. This "parallel market" has been fuelled by influencers on platforms including TikTok, Telegram and Facebook.
Health officials have warned that using these unregulated products carries extreme risks. Andy Morling, head of the MHRA's Criminal Enforcement Unit, described the practice as "just you and a syringe full of risk".
The campaign group Save Face has claimed that some black-market "skinny jabs" have been found to contain windscreen wash. Previous test purchases of syringes claiming to contain semaglutide were found by BBC News NI to contain carnitine.
One patient, identified as Chloe, reported that she nearly died after injecting herself with a weight-loss drug bought through a third party. She spent time in intensive care and was unable to work for three months.
The National Pharmacy Association has also warned patients against products with pricing that appears too good to be true.
No arrests had been made in connection with the October 2025 Northampton warehouse raid as of January 2026. The Guardian has reported links between the operation and a crypto entrepreneur.
