Spectator counts a record 98 Budget measures, with £7bn of tax and £7bn of spending

The Chancellor, John Healey, has put 98 policy measures on his Budget scorecard, according to analysis by the Spectator. It says that is more than any recent Chancellor, and that the measures add up to £7bn of extra tax and £7bn of extra spending.

A second Spectator piece says the average value of each measure is a record low. The Guardian's John Crace also uses the figure of 98.

The Spectator's £7bn of tax is higher than the estimate of about £6bn in 2029-30 given earlier in a City AM column. The Spectator does not say which year its figures cover, so the two totals cannot be directly compared.

Neither the count of measures nor either tax total has been independently checked against the Budget scorecard.
