Shelter says 372,652 renting households have £7 or less a day after bills

The housing charity Shelter is urging the Chancellor, John Healey, to write off social housing debt and speed up social housebuilding in the 28 October Budget.

In analysis published on 18 October, Shelter estimates that 372,652 private renting households in England have less than £50 a week left after rent, council tax, water and energy bills. The charity says that works out at £7 or less a day.

Shelter also cites Savills research carried out for the charity. That research says every £1bn of debt removed would enable 8,900 new homes, and that removing what Shelter calls an "unfair debt burden" could unlock 284,000 social rent homes. Shelter says social rents are on average 67% lower than private rents.

The renter figures come from a Savanta survey of 3,337 adults, including 1,461 employed private renters. It was carried out between 21 April and 8 May, so it was not conducted with the Budget in mind.

These are a campaigner's figures and have not been independently checked.
