The £100 Household Energy Payment will be paid into bank accounts from January, according to the Mirror, via AOL.
In his Budget statement the Chancellor, John Healey, said only that the payment would arrive "this winter" and would see people "through to the Spring". A January start fits with that, but the Treasury has not confirmed the date.
The payment goes to 20 million households in council tax bands A to D, according to Healey.
The Mirror also reports that the council tax band checker website crashed after the Chancellor's announcement. The report does not say which website was affected or for how long it was down.
