We report that the Daily Mirror says Chancellor John Healey will announce more than £1bn of extra funding for social and affordable housing in his Budget on Wednesday 28 October. The paper says the money could deliver up to 10,000 homes. The Treasury has not confirmed the figures. A spokesman said the Budget would "go further" on affordable housing and help councils borrow to build.
Our article finds the top-up would be less than 3% of the existing £39bn, 10-year Social and Affordable Homes Programme. On the Mirror's own numbers it works out at around £100,000 of grant per home. The programme funds housing associations as well as councils.
