We report that Chancellor John Healey has told The Times he wants to be "a chancellor who backs business" and will look at "the cost of business" in his first Budget on Wednesday 28 October.
Healey set out no specific measures, costings or thresholds, and no Treasury document accompanied his remarks. City AM reported that he signalled plans to reduce the reporting burden on smaller firms, but which requirements would go has not been set out.
Reports of tax measures aimed at family businesses and banks have not been confirmed by the Treasury, which has ruled out a rise in capital gains tax.
