Healey confirms 5p fuel duty cut and red diesel cut extended to July

The Chancellor, John Healey, has confirmed in the Commons that the 5p fuel duty cut and the cut rate on red diesel will be extended to July.

"With the war in the Middle East still driving high fuel prices, I am extending these tax cuts for motorists through the winter and spring to July."

His words, as reported by City AM, commit the government only until July. That is shorter than the full year implied by PA's preview this morning, which said the freeze would run for a 16th year.

The figures in the two reports also differ. City AM says duty will stay at 53p a litre until July and calls this the 15th consecutive year of a freeze or cut. PA's preview had put the rate at 52p a litre and described it as the 16th year of a freeze.

Neither the rate nor the year count has yet been checked against the Budget documents, and the difference between the two reports is unresolved.
