The Green Party has dismissed the scrapping of gas standing charges as "more tinkering from a Government that is failing to take the bold action needed", according to LBC's Budget live blog.
A party spokesperson said the measure fell short of what is needed on the cost of living. It is an opposition party's verdict on a policy the Treasury confirmed ahead of John Healey's 12:30pm Budget statement today.
The Treasury says gas standing charges will be scrapped "in 2027 or as soon as possible after", with the cost moved into the unit rate. It estimates that 60% of households will save an average of £45 a year. MoneySavingExpert says above-average gas users are likely to pay more.
