The Chancellor, John Healey, has "reportedly" bowed to pressure to cancel January's planned rise in fuel duty, according to PA. Its preview of today's Budget says the rate will stay frozen for a 16th year at 52p a litre.
This goes further than the BBC report on 27 October, which said only that the freeze would continue. PA's report of a cancelled January rise is consistent with Brit Brief's earlier report that, without action, prices would rise by 3p a litre from January 2027.
PA also says pump prices for petrol and diesel are soaring. The Yorkshire Post also expects the freeze to continue.
The Treasury has not confirmed the measure, and the 52p rate has not been independently checked. The Chancellor delivers the Budget to the Commons today.
