Defence Secretary Wes Streeting says MoD will get Budget uplift but must prioritise

The Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, says his department will get more money in Wednesday's Budget. He has not ruled out cutting or deferring spending on military housing and equipment.

Speaking to LBC, he said the Ministry of Defence was:

"having to prioritise to make sure that we are focused on those things that will make us most warfighting ready"

LBC says Treasury sources have said the gap in the Defence Investment Plan will be addressed in the Budget. LBC puts that gap at £5bn. PA has put it at £4.7bn. LBC also cites a Telegraph report that up to £3bn may have to be reprioritised to fund the plan in full. That report has not been confirmed.

Eastern Eye quotes Mr Streeting saying: "I am 100 per cent confident that under this Labour prime minister and chancellor we will meet our Nato spending target." It reports that he said Britain must be ready to fight within 1,000 days.

Eastern Eye says the government has shifted its focus from 3% of GDP by 2030 to Nato's target of 3.5% by 2035. That is the outlet's own description, and the government has not confirmed it.

Mr Streeting also says the government is "delivering the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War". That claim has not been independently checked.
