Business leaders press Healey to hold back on tax rises, Bloomberg reports

Business leaders have warned the Chancellor, John Healey, that their hiring of young workers depends on the scale of tax rises in the Budget, according to Bloomberg, which cites people familiar with the matter.

Bloomberg reports that Mr Healey and the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, held separate meetings with business leaders on the morning of Tuesday 13 October.

A summary published by KuCoin says retail chief executives told Mr Healey at a breakfast at Number 11 that reducing hiring costs would help tackle youth unemployment.

The same summary sets out other industry demands. It says venture capital groups oppose any increase in capital gains tax. Energy firms want policy costs removed from electricity bills, and employers want rates exemptions for high-value retail and hospitality sites.

These are lobbying positions reported from private meetings. Neither the Treasury nor Number 10 has confirmed what was discussed, and the reports have not been independently checked.
