Budget AI package to fund Edinburgh chip design and Manchester centre, FT reports

The Budget's AI spending will go beyond the £100m AI Biosecurity Lab to include AI chip design in Edinburgh and a new AI Centre of Excellence in Manchester, the FT reports, according to a summary by Zetik.

The summary says hundreds of millions of pounds for a UK AI push will be set out in Wednesday's Budget, including fresh funding for the AI Security Institute. It gives no amounts for any of the three items, and none of them has been confirmed by the government.

Funding for the AI Security Institute is consistent with earlier BBC reporting that the Chancellor, John Healey, will pledge an additional £120m for it.

The summary puts the lab at up to £300m. That figure is the £100m in government money plus the up to £200m in model credits from OpenAI and Anthropic reported earlier, so it does not point to a larger sum.

No amounts have been reported for the Edinburgh and Manchester projects. Until they are, it is not possible to say whether they account for the gap between AI Weekly's estimate of about £600m for the whole package and the £415m that its named parts add up to.
