The big banks' shares closed up 1.6% to 2.0% on Budget day, according to a market wrap by Brit Brief. That is a smaller gain than the 3% to 4% rise reported here earlier, which was a move during the day rather than the close.
Brit Brief has Lloyds Banking Group closing up 1.7%, Barclays up 1.6% and NatWest up 2.0%. The shares rose even though the Chancellor, John Healey, doubled the bank surcharge from 3% to 6%.
Standard Chartered rose 2.4%. It raised its guidance alongside its third-quarter results, so its rise was not purely a Budget move.
Brit Brief also reports that the 10-year gilt yield nudged down to 5.33%, from 5.34% at the same time on Tuesday.
Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, gave the bond market's verdict as a "decent B+", Brit Brief reports. Kallum Pickering, chief economist at Peel Hunt, called the Budget "mostly inconsequential".
