Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, told MPs in her reply to the Budget that the tax burden next year will be a record, according to MoneyWeek's live blog.
"Next year, under Labour, the tax burden will be the highest in our country's history"
She also said the benefits bill is rising by tens of billions. That figure has not been independently checked.
The record level of tax in the OBR's forecasts is later than next year. ING, citing the OBR, puts the tax take at a record 42.9% of GDP by 2031-32. Whether next year's level would on its own be the highest on record has not been independently checked.
Ms Badenoch summed up her case against the Budget: "We are overspent, overborrowed, overtaxed".
