According to LBC, she also claimed the UK pays a higher interest rate on its debt than Greece, Latvia, Slovakia and Vietnam. Neither claim has been independently checked.

Rupert Lowe, leader of Restore Britain, said: "Debt is now three trillion pounds, and billions more are added every month." That figure has not been independently checked.

Zack Polanski, the Green leader, wrote on X: "Was that it? It all felt very familiar. A Labour Government totally unwilling to take on power and wealth and give our country the investment we so desperately need."

John O'Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said the Chancellor "has driven the tax burden to another record high". ING, citing the OBR, puts the tax take at a record 42.9% of GDP by 2031-32.

David Postings, chief executive of UK Finance, said: "We recognise that the Chancellor faced very difficult choices in this Budget". Small Business Britain also responded in measured terms. Simon Clarke, director of Onward, called it "a missed opportunity", according to ConservativeHome.
