Andy Haldane gives Budget four out of ten and warns of gilt market 'precipice'

Andy Haldane, former Bank of England chief economist and former adviser to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, gives the Budget four out of ten and warns that Britain risks a Truss-style shock in the gilt market.

"We are on a precipice on that front."

Speaking on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg on 1 November, he said the public finances are at risk of a blow-out in borrowing costs. He accused the government of complacency and said the Chancellor, John Healey, needs "fierce urgency" on growth and debt.

Haldane said the risk of "something untoward" in public debt markets is "very great" and pointed to France today. That is his assessment of the risk, not a checked fact. The markets' reaction on Budget day was muted. The 10-year gilt yield stood at about 5.33% and fund managers called it a "boring Budget".

Before the Budget, Haldane told the Times that Burnham risked a Truss-style crisis if he did not cut spending.

Healey was interviewed on the same programme. According to HuffPost UK, he said his long-term plans will be set out in next year's spending review.
