Most estate agents responding to a Propertymark snapshot poll say landlords have asked them about leaving the private rented sector since the Budget. The figures appear in a report published on 7 November and carried by Yahoo News.
According to the report, 57% of respondents had received such enquiries in the days after the Chancellor, John Healey, announced tax rises on landlords. Propertymark represents nearly 20,000 estate agents. The respondents act for landlords with an estimated 2,860 properties on their books.
The poll counts enquiries received by agents. It does not show how many landlords plan to sell, and the sample is small.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government says there is no evidence of large numbers of landlords leaving the private rented sector.
The report also cites the property market site TwentyEA. It says former rental homes make up 15% of homes on the sales market and that more than 800,000 properties have been sold off since 2020. These figures have not been independently checked.
The National Residential Landlords Association is already campaigning against the tax rises. It warns they will push up rents.
