This is a wire-style news report from Friday 30 October 2026. It appears to combine AFP copy (as run by Arab News) with Reuters material on the UKMTO incident. I checked every high-priority claim against at least two independent sources dated 25–30 October 2026, and they all match. These claims are: Oman's rescue of 25 crew from the Panama-flagged RITI; the war starting on 28 February 2026 with US-Israeli strikes; CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper saying in a video that the primary routes have been cleared of mines; the 1.5 billion barrels figure; the IRGC's statements on four tankers; the UKMTO report of a projectile strike 40 nm south of Lavan Island; and the US blockade of Iranian ports, which was lifted on 18 June and reimposed on 14 July. The article attributes the IRGC's claims about mine strikes and 'incidents' correctly, but nobody has independently confirmed that the strikes actually happened, so they stay Unverified as facts. The article also doesn't make clear that the UKMTO-reported vessel and the RITI may or may not be among the tankers the IRGC described; Reuters says this outright. I found no false claims.

  • Oman's Maritime Security Centre said the Royal Navy of Oman evacuated 25 crew members from the Panama-flagged merchant ship RITI after it was targeted and caught fire, and that the crew received medical care. • MarineTraffic describes the RITI as a crude oil tanker. Several outlets independently carry the same detail. • The article says Cooper was 'repeating earlier statements' about clearing mines and the 1.5 billion barrels. This is accurate: CENTCOM said on 25 October that it had helped Gulf partners export more than 1.5 billion barrels since the summer, and Cooper made similar mine-clearance statements in August. • The IRGC put out statements saying four tankers in total had been halted or hit mines: two 'offending' tankers in the eastern and western strait, then a supertanker carrying 2 million barrels, then a fourth tanker carrying more than 2 million barrels that was burning. The quotes about tankers switching off their navigation systems 'with the support of the terrorist US military' are accurately attributed. • That the four tankers actually struck mines or suffered explosions (as opposed to the IRGC claiming they did). The only source is IRGC/Iranian state media; no shipowner, flag state or independent tracker has confirmed it in the sources I found. The article attributes the claim correctly.
  • That the vessels 'received several radio warnings but disregarded them'. This is an IRGC/Iranian armed forces assertion only.
  • That the tankers had switched off their AIS/navigation systems with US military support. This is an IRGC assertion only; I found no independent AIS analysis.
  • Who attacked the RITI. Oman said only that the ship was 'targeted' and named no attacker. Whether the RITI is the UKMTO-reported vessel, or one of the IRGC's four tankers, is not established. Reuters notes it was unclear whether the UKMTO vessels were among the IRGC's four.
  • That Cooper visited 'some of the more than 50,000 US service members in the region'. In the sources I retrieved, the 50,000 figure appears only in an OSINT aggregator's summary of the CENTCOM video (https://x.com/sentdefender/status/2116133789340463213). Gulf News confirms the visit itself on 25 October. The figure is plausible but I could not confirm it from a primary or major outlet.
  • That ships are 'regularly' coming under Iranian fire. This is broadly consistent with the record of attacks on shipping during the war (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_attacked_during_the_2026_Iran_war), but it is a characterisation, and many incidents have no confirmed attacker.

Confidence

High (about 80%) — Every high-priority attributed claim matches at least two independent sources from the same news cycle (Reuters, AFP outlets, Dawn, Gulf News, Middle East Eye), plus official statements quoted in those reports. The blockade timeline is checked against NPR, CNN and Al Jazeera. Confidence is not higher for three reasons: I reviewed snippets rather than the original primary statements; the events were still developing on the day; and the key factual question of whether mines actually struck tankers has not been independently confirmed by anyone.

MUSCAT: Oman said on Friday it had rescued 25 sailors from a merchant ship that was targeted and set ablaze, as Iran reported four oil tankers were halted while crossing the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat’s navy “carried out an evacuation operation for 25 crew members of the merchant ship RITI, flying the Panamanian flag, after it was targeted, which led to a fire breaking out on board,” Oman’s Maritime Security Center said in a statement. The crew members were provided with medical care, the Omani statement said, without giving details. The Marine Traffic ship-tracking website described the RITI as a crude oil tanker. Tehran has restricted maritime traffic through the strait since the Middle East war began on Feb. 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. The narrow strait, which normally carries a fifth of global oil, has become a focal point of the war with ships regularly coming under Iranian fire. In a video released on Friday, US Central Command chief Brad Cooper said US forces had “successfully cleared the strait’s internationally recognized primary transit routes of Iranian sea mines” and remain “present to ensure that all primary transit routes in the Strait of Hormuz remain free and clear.” Cooper said he visited some of the more than 50,000 US service members in the region, repeating earlier statements that the US has helped Gulf countries export more than 1.5 billion barrels via the strait since the summer. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said four oil tankers had been halted after encountering unspecified “incidents” or hitting mines. “Two offending oil tankers, one in the eastern part and the other in the western part of the Strait of Hormuz, which were attempting to pass through the unauthorized route, encountered incidents and were brought to a halt in the waters south of the strait,” the IRGC said in a statement. Iran has demanded that vessels use a designated route through the strait and coordinate their passage with the country’s armed forces, labelling a southern corridor closer to Oman’s shores as unauthorized. The tankers had “switched off all their navigation and positioning systems and, with the support of the terrorist US military, were attempting to exit through the unauthorized route,” the Guards’ statement said. The Guards did not specify the nature of the incidents, which came a day after Iran’s armed forces said at least four tankers had stopped in the area after hitting mines. They said Friday’s incidents occurred after the vessels received several radio warnings but disregarded them. The IRGC later said in a separate statement that a supertanker carrying two million barrels of oil had stopped following an explosion “after striking a naval mine while navigating an unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz.” In a later statement the IRGC said a fourth tanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude oil, had hit a mine, suffered a powerful explosion and was burning. The United Kingdom Maritime ‌Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency ‌said later on Friday that a vessel was hit by an unknown projectile 40 nautical ‌miles ‌south of ‌Iran's Lavan Island, causing a fire onboard. The ‌crew were reported safe ‌and there was no immediate environmental impact, the British navy affiliated agency said. The United States has responded to Iran’s attempted blockade of the strait with a counterblockade of Iranian ports, further restricting Tehran’s ability to export oil and conduct trade.
