This is a short, first-person opinion post by John J. Mearsheimer (Substack, dated 3 September 2026) recapping his appearance on Tom Switzer's 'Switzerland' programme and arguing that the US/Israeli economic strangulation strategy against Iran will not produce Iranian surrender or regime change. Targeted research confirms the piece's core factual scaffolding: a US naval blockade of Iran has been in force since 13 April 2026 (second phase from 14 July 2026 and ongoing), the Strait of Hormuz was at effective closure on 2 September 2026, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a sweeping sanctions campaign ('Economic D-Day' / 'Operation Economic Outcast') on 24 August 2026 targeting digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping, with Bessent warning on 31 August 2026 that Iran's economy could collapse within months. Evidence also supports severe Iranian economic distress (record-low rial, inflation spiral, contraction). The weaknesses are analytical rather than factual: (a) the claim that China, Russia and Turkey 'want to see Iran win the war' is overstated and contradicted by reputable analyses showing all three sought an early end to the war and that Beijing has avoided formal defence commitments, even while sanctions-evasion supply chains do assist Tehran; (b) 'dead on arrival' and 'never stood a chance' are unfalsifiable predictions about a policy only ~10 days old at the time of writing; (c) the absolute historical claim that no country has ever been defeated by economic pressure alone is a contested scholarly proposition (consistent with Pape, contested by Hufbauer-type success tallies and the Libya/South Africa cases); and (d) the post contains zero citations or links, so readers cannot audit any assertion. Emotional manipulation is low; the persuasive risk lies in confident authority-based assertion, not inflammatory language.

What checked out (8)
  • A US economic/naval blockade of Iran is ongoing as of early September 2026 — the blockade was imposed on 13 April 2026 after the failure of the Islamabad Talks, with a second phase running 14 July 2026 to present (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_United_States_naval_blockade_of_Iran); on Day 187 (2 September 2026) the Strait of Hormuz was reported at effective closure, at roughly 3% of pre-war vessel traffic (https://www.iransitrep.com/).
  • There is a 'newly announced Bessent strategy' — US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled an 'economic D-Day' sanctions campaign, officially 'Operation Economic Outcast', at a press conference on 24 August 2026 (https://www.axios.com/2026/08/24/bessent-dday-iran-secondary-sanctions ; https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bessent-press-conference-iran-sanctions-economic-d-day/ ; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_D-Day).
  • The Bessent plan targets five sectors — digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping — plus secondary sanctions and closure of Bank Melli branches abroad (https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/6047974-trump-bessent-iran-economy-sanctions/ ; https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/iran-trump-war-sanctions-hormuz-israel-august-24).
  • The strategy is explicitly framed by its proponents as coercion toward capitulation or collapse — Bessent warned on 31 August 2026 that Iran's economy could collapse within months (https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2026/8/31/iran-could-face-economic-collapse-in-months-us-treasurys-bessent-warns), and reporting describes the aim as squeezing Iranian leaders into submission (https://www.axios.com/2026/08/24/trump-iran-sanctions-bessent-economy).
  • Iran's economy has suffered severe damage under war and sanctions — record-low rial (reported at 2.05 million rial/USD after the D-Day announcement), hyperinflation and contraction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_D-Day ; https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/23/iran-economy-war-charts-rial-oil-strait-hormuz-blockade.html ; https://www.euronews.com/business/2026/06/30/irans-inflation-spiral-deepens-as-rial-slides-and-tensions-rise).
  • The war context is real and ongoing — the 2026 Iran war was initiated by the United States and Israel on 28 February 2026 and remains active into September 2026 (https://www.britannica.com/event/2026-Iran-war ; https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iran-war-oprep.htm).
  • Regime change is a credible characterisation of US/Israeli war aims, supporting the author's 'existential threat' premise — Trump and Netanyahu indicated regime change as a goal and called on Iranians to take over (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regime_change_efforts_in_the_2026_Iran_war ; https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-goals-iran-war-and-what-hes-saying-now-nuclear-missiles-regime-change/), and a 2 September 2026 analysis states Trump is again pursuing regime change (https://reason.com/2026/09/02/trump-is-back-to-seeking-regime-change-in-iran/).
  • Mearsheimer is a recurring guest on Tom Switzer's programme and the current latest episode is listed as 'Mearsheimer: Has the War Turned Against Iran?' (https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/switzerland-with-tom-switzer-tom-switzer-JyuipNtl-em/ ; https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/switzerland-with-tom-switzer/id1867017379).
Disputed claims 3 claims
  • DISPUTED (overstated, not false): 'China, Russia, and Turkey ... want to see Iran win the war and will help it survive.' The 'help it survive' half is supported — Atlantic Council research describes an 'axis of evasion' in which China and Russia enable Iran through non-Western supply chains including drone components and rocket-fuel inputs (https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/dispatches/from-drones-to-rocket-fuel-china-and-russia-are-helping-iran-through-supply-chains/ ; https://asiatimes.com/2026/03/russia-arms-iran-cementing-a-drone-powered-anti-us-axis/). The 'want Iran to win' half is contested by dated reputable sources: a March 2026 USCC primer states China has avoided formal defence commitments and is unlikely to act significantly beyond diplomatic support and dual-use supplies (https://www.uscc.gov/sites/default/files/2026-03/China-Iran_Fact_Sheet_A_Short_Primer_on_the_Relationship.pdf); Russia, China and Turkey jointly pushed for an immediate end to the war (https://www.timesofisrael.com/russia-china-and-turkey-push-for-immediate-end-to-iran-war/); and Turkey is described as never having wanted the war, fearing an Iranian collapse and a nuclear Iran alike (https://www.foreignaffairs.com/turkey/iran-wars-threat-turkey ; https://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/turkeys-limited-role-iran-war). Regime survival preference is not equivalent to wanting an Iranian victory.
  • CONTESTED/DEFINITIONAL (not marked false): 'There is no case in the historical record where one country defeated an adversary with economic pressure alone.' This aligns with Pape's influential finding that economic sanctions rarely work (https://www.almendron.com/tribuna/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/why-economic-sanctions-do-not-work.pdf), but the wider literature reports non-trivial success rates of roughly 5–34% depending on coding (https://www.beyondintractability.org/essay/sanctions ; https://www.piie.com/sites/default/files/publications/papers/hufbauer0708ppt.pdf), and Libya's Lockerbie/WMD reversal and South Africa are commonly cited as cases where pressure produced major concessions (https://www.cfr.org/backgrounders/un-sanctions-mixed-record). Whether 'concession' equals 'defeat' is definitional, so the claim survives as defensible-but-absolutist rather than demonstrably false.
  • DISPUTED (framing): the implicit suggestion that no Iranian domestic instability pressure exists. Nationwide protests erupted in late December 2025 and were suppressed, with persistent questions about regime stability (https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IF13153 ; https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-10462/). This does not validate the strangulation strategy, but the post omits a materially relevant counter-consideration.
? Unverified claims 7 claims
  • That the specific broadcast occurred on 2 September 2026 — the episode exists and is listed as the latest release (posted within ~1 day of 3 September 2026), but no source examined states the exact recording/air date. Marked Unverified rather than Verified on date precision.
  • That Tom Switzer personally 'does not believe' the arguments he advanced — a claim about a third party's private beliefs; no source can confirm or refute it.
  • 'There is hardly any evidence this approach is working' — partially contradicted by early indicators (record-low rial; reported UAE compliance and EU support per https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2026/8/31/iran-could-face-economic-collapse-in-months-us-treasurys-bessent-warns ; China's Iranian oil imports reported nearly halved since the war began per https://www.thenationalnews.com/business/energy/2026/08/26/chart-of-the-week-chinas-iranian-oil-imports-nearly-halve-since-war/), yet also consistent with the absence of surrender or uprising. The measure ('working') is undefined and the policy is ~10 days old; not assessable either way.
  • 'The Bessent strategy never stood a chance of succeeding. It was dead on arrival.' — an unfalsifiable forward-looking judgement about a campaign announced 24 August 2026; no primary or secondary source can currently confirm or refute it.
  • 'Iran is facing an existential threat ... which incentivizes Iranians to fight to the death' — the threat premise is supported (see verified claims), but the behavioural prediction about mass willingness to fight to the death is an inference with no supporting polling or field data located.
  • Engagement metrics (147 likes, 24 comments, 21 restacks) and the commenter claims about helium and fertiliser shortages caused by an Iranian counter-blockade — platform metrics are not independently auditable, and no source located quantifies helium/fertiliser disruption specifically.
  • The characterisation that only 'a handful' of Iran war supporters make the strangulation argument — this is an unquantified framing device; reporting shows it is now the administration's central declared strategy, which cuts against 'a handful' (https://fortune.com/2026/08/13/trump-iran-economic-pressure/).
Sources & how we checked Search journal, source grades, confidence
Confidence

Moderate-High (0.78) — Confidence is raised by dense, recent, multi-perspective corroboration of every checkable factual premise: the blockade timeline is confirmed by encyclopaedic and OSINT sources; the Bessent campaign is confirmed by at least six independent outlets across the political spectrum plus the Treasury Secretary's own quoted statements from 24 and 31 August 2026; Iranian economic distress is confirmed by multiple financial outlets; and the third-party-support question was checked against a governmental primary source as well as think tanks with opposing priors. Confidence is capped below 0.9 because (i) the specific 2 September 2026 broadcast could not be date-verified and its content was not audited, (ii) the article's central assertions are predictive and therefore structurally unadjudicable, (iii) the situation is fast-moving — blockade status, Hormuz traffic, ceasefire mediation and sanctions effects were changing on a daily cadence at the time of assessment, so any evaluation of 'is it working' is provisional, and (iv) several corroborations rely on encyclopaedic aggregation rather than direct primary documentation. Per the guardrails, no claim was downgraded to 'False' on the strength of model priors alone.

Mearsheimer]( Sep 03, 2026 147 24 21 Share On 2 September 2026, I was on “Switzerland” with Tom Switzer, who spent most of the show putting forth the argument, which he does not believe, that is now being made by a handful of supporters of the Iran war. They maintain that the ongoing economic blockade + the newly announced Bessent strategy will strangle the Iranian economy to the point where there is either regime change or abject surrender by the present regime. Unsurprisingly, I made the argument that this approach is not going to work. There is no question the US and Israel have **already**inflicted enormous pain on Iran and crippled its economy, but getting Iran to surrender or producing a popular uprising is another matter. Indeed, there is hardly any evidence this approach is working, and it is clear that the widely trumpeted Bessent strategy never stood a chance of succeeding. It was dead on arrival. Moreover, there are many countries — China, Russia, and Turkey among them — who want to see Iran win the war and will help it survive. On top of that, Iran is facing an existential threat from the US and Israel, which incentivizes Iranians to fight to the death. Finally, there is no case in the historical record where one country defeated an adversary with economic pressure alone. [Video 3]( * * * #### Subscribe to John’s Substack By John J. Iran also has a blockade on ships trying to transit the Straits retarding the world supply of fertilizer, helium and other key products (no alternative pipelines for these commodities) as well as retarding the Gulf export of oil. If the US blockade is creating hardship on Iran, is not the Iranian blockade eventually doing the same to the West? This is not a single blockade, but a double blockade imposed by both sides on the other.
