Correction and apology: Councillor David Barker

Correction and apology: Councillor David Barker

On 10 May 2026 we published an article about Councillor David Barker, elected to Sunderland City Council for Deptford and Hendon in May 2026. The article stated that he was the David Barker given a suspended sentence at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court in 2019.

The article was published on the basis of reports then in the public domain. Councillor Barker has since provided information showing that he is not the person sentenced in 2019, and the reports we relied on have been withdrawn by their publishers. The article has been removed.

To confirm: Councillor David Barker is not the David Barker sentenced in 2019 and has no such conviction. We apologise unreservedly to Councillor Barker.
